Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the option to contest specific calls made by the official, following the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
